In-school Mentoring Coordinator

Free In School Mentoring is available to youth from Kindergarten to Grade 9


The program is designed to address the study/homework issues that potential early school leavers may face. Mentors are High School Students, Post Secondary Students and/or Corporate Employees who want to make a difference in the life of a child. Referrals for this program are accepted from students, parents, teachers and counselors.

Mentor's Job Description

"Mentor” Definition
A volunteer that provides homework support to students in kindergarten to Grade 9.

Time Commitment
Hours are flexible and reflect the needs of both the Mentor and student. One hour per week with a minimum commitment of four months.

Responsibilities
Work with students on identified areas of need such as reading, math, and organization skills. Establish working relationships with students, parents, teachers, and the program coordinator.

Required Experience
A genuine interest in working with children and a desire to make a difference. Good communication skills, organization skills, and patience.

Benefits
Gain experience working with students. Acquire information on topics such as portfolio making, teaching study skills, board interviews, and how to make learning fun. An opportunity for a reference letter.

Student's Job Description

“Student” Definition
A student in kindergarten to Grade 9 who would like a Mentor to help them with their homework.

Time Commitment
Students will receive one hour of help per week. Mentors will make a 4, 8, or 10 month commitment. Meetings are usually held at the students' school; however other arrangements can be made with the written consent of parents.

Responsibilities
Students must be on time and prepared for all scheduled meetings.
